Bimetallic Strip

Invar

An alloy of Iron with 36% Nickel, which expands by only 0.9mm per km for each centigrade degree temperature rise. This is one tenth the expansion of platinum and titanium and less than one twentieth of that of most other metals.  It was discovered in 1896

Brass

An alloy of Copper and Zinc. Brasses containing less than 36% Zinc are ductile when cold and can be easily worked into complex shapes.
